En man som heter Ove

”En man som heter Ove” is a swedish book that I started reading this summer. It was written in 2012 by Fredrik Backman. If you translate the title to swedish it is called ”A man called Ove”.

The book is about a man called Ove. Ove is around 60 years old and is depressed after his wife died a few months ago and in the beginning of the book he lost the thing he loves the second most in life, his job. Ove is a man that likes order. When he’s unemployed he becomes restless and starts to think a lot about his wife. He can’t stand the pain of not having her around and decides to kill himself but fails several times. Since he likes order he patrols the neighborhood in the mornings and makes sure everything is as it should be. Throughout the book he starts to come close to some of his neighbors than before, since Ove is a very grumpy old man and can still be very rude to people. Every second chapter or so of the book is about Oves life at the moment and the other chapters tell the very sad and depressing story of Oves childhood. How his parents died, when he left school and got a job, when he built his own home that later burned down and when he had to rebuild it. But the most important happening was when he met his wife, Sonja, and not even that story ends happy. 

The book is very well written with funny dialogues between Ove and his obnoxious neighbors and with touching storytelling of Oves former life.

When I read the book I get happy and sad, depending on which chapter I am reading. You can be laughing out loud one moment and the next be really down. You really understand Oves pain the further you come in the book, which, when you start reading it, doesn’t feel like a sad book.

I don’t have many memories from reading the book since I’m not even done with it yet. But one memory that I have is when I were on the beach in Spain this summer and I was reading the book. It was a warm day and I was laying on the towel in the sand under the parasol and reading the book and I remember that I was really into the book. I also have memories from the rest of my family telling me that it is a good book.

”En man som heter Ove” is a really great book and is definitely worth the read. 

Questions about "The Island"

Question 1.

I think that the main theme in this movie is about ”How much a human is worth?”. They talk about it from time to time. When Doctor Merrick talks with the black agent and the other people in the room, he shows the product and they start asking a lot of questions about the subject. I believe they are thinking about how the clones feel, if there is any better way instead of killing the clones. They don’t seem too happy about how they deal with the clones at the facility. Another interesting question that the movie brings up is ”What makes a human?”. Are the clones in the movie really humans? Do you have to be able to feel all emotions to be a human? The clones does not, for example, feel love or sexual attraction. Are they humans anyway? The film deals with the questions quite well. There are a few scenes in the movie where the real humans talk about the clones and it doesn’t really sound like they like the idea of cloning humans and then killing them for their bodyparts. For example when Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta are at the engineer’s house. He tells them what is going on at the facility and that they are actually just clones. He seems upset, just like Lincoln and Jordan after they have heard the news.

Question 4. 

To be honest, I have no idea what Jordan means when she says ”The Island is real. It’s us” but I have some speculations though. The Island is like a dream of a paradise. When they are free from the facility, after they have rescued all the clones, they are in a way in a paradise, compared to where they were before that. Now they are free and can do whatever they like. Before they were captured and were forced to work. Everything they did was under control and regulated by the facility. Now when they are free, they are in a paradise, ”on The Island”.

Character Tracer - Christopher Boone

Christopher Boone is fifteen years old and has Asperger’s syndrome. He is smart, knows a lot of maths, loves patterns, lists, dogs and the truth. Since Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome he has trouble talking with other people and I think he doesn’t like talking to other people either because they are so complicated. That might also be the reason why he loves dogs, the text says that they are very simple (they only have four moods), and they do not tell lies. Christopher hates lies. He hates the colours brown and yellow and when people touch him. Christopher rarely walks far away from home. Christopher had a hard time understanding why the woman was angry and yelling at him when he had picked up the dead dog. 

I think that the things Christopher likes has some things in common. Patterns, lists, dogs, the truth and policemen are all very reliable, they do what they are supposed to do. I think that is why he likes them. That is also probably why he doesn’t want to leave his street, he thinks it’s not safe and he doesn’t know what is out there. He can not be sure off what will happen.

Summarizer, Narnia w.6

This story is about four children; Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. They are from London but they get sent away during the World War II air raids. They get sent to a big house in the country where an old Professor lives with a housekeeper and three servants. When they get there they are really excited to go exploring outside in the morning. When the next day comes it is raining outside so they decide to explore the big house instead. They explore plenty of spare bedrooms, a room with paintings and a suit of armor and a series of rooms with books by the walls. Then they discover an empty room with nothing but a blue wardrobe in one end. Everyone except Lucy left the room. Lucy opened the wardrobe and walked in with the door open in case anything would happen. At the end of the wardrobe Lucy enters a new world called Narnia. She sees snow falling down and she sees a man that is half man and half goat. His waist and upwards is a man and his legs are from a goat. He has two horns sticking out from his head. He is a Faun and he seems to be nice.

Creative connector

I couldn’t think of that many connections to this text. But one that I got when I read it was a connection with a web series, a humor series, that I’ve seen. It was a small scene where two colleagues on an office were talking. One of them got a promotion and his friend wanted to celebrate it by going out and having a beer. The other one were happy and they continued talking. When they were done the friend were about to leave but before he left he tried to kiss his friend. He had misread the situation, he thought it was a perfect time to kiss. The only problem was that both of them were guys and it got really awkward. The connection here is that the girl in the story also misread the situation and her relation with Gift. Maybe it would get just as awkward in the story as in the show if the girl would have kissed Gift.

Richard Wright

Richard is a young boy that lives in Memphis, Tennessee. He lives in an apartment with his mother and brother. His mother and his father had fought and then his father left them. They have little to no food and money and his mother works as a cook. Richard doesn’t like his father because the texts says that whenever he thinks of him he associates his father with bitterness. I know Richard is young because his mother explain very simple things to him that he doesn’t understand and he asks about a lot of things. He always asks ”Why?” and wants his mother to explain. Richard is very brave when he trusts his mother and goes back outside to fight the gang. The texts doesn’t describe how he looks but he might be black since the book is called ”Black boy” and Richard is the main character in the book.

Summary: Baby's Ears

Val and her mom are worried about Grandma. Ever since she moved to Florida she never left the house. She stays home and watches TV all day. If she moves back to New York she will have to live in a nursing home. Val has an idea to get Grandma out of the house. She takes her to the beach and drops seashells from her seashell collection in the sand and then she tells Grandma to help her find shells for her collection. At first they find nothing but then when Val leads Grandma to the place where she dropped all the shells, Grandma finds them and thinks it’s fun to be in Florida. When they get home Grandma says she should start her own collection of seashells, and Val should help her. The name Baby’s Ears comes from one of the shells in Val’s collection. It is her favorite shell.

I didn’t really collect anything. When I were younger I had a lot of stuffed animals. I liked to have many stuffed animals. With them I felt happy and safe. I used to build a lot with Lego but I didn’t play with it. Other than that I didn’t collect anything. I remember my friend used to collect caps (from bottles). If I found any I gave them to him. 

English, Modern Ghost Stories: The Trip

When Anna told her parents that she had tried to warn them, they got quiet. They felt bad for Anna because no one had listened to her.

- We are sorry, Anna. We didn’t mean to ignore you. We just thought you were kidding with us, you often try to pull off some funny joke in serious situations.

- It’s ok. I understand.

The rest of the trip home the family was happy and everyone was talking. Anna learned how important it was to make sure people understand when you are serious and when you are joking.

Emma couldn’t sleep that night. She woke up several times, sweaty and afraid. She looked at the clock and then out of the window. It was 00:02 and raining. She sat up in bed and tried to think of who would want to hurt her. After a couple of minutes she was determined that it was someone she didn’t know. She fell back asleep and the next day she stayed at home, afraid that this someone would wait for her outside of her house or at school. She told her parents about it and they took it very seriously. That afternoon they called the principle and told her about the messages Emma had received that month.

A few days later it was settled that Emma was going to start on a new school. Emma never returned to her old school, nor did she talk to any of her old friends. All of this just because Billy in her class had been pranking her since April’s Fools Day. Billy was Simon’s best friend.

Summary Lockie Leonard Episode 12

In this episode Lockie and Egg prepares for a meeting about the toxic river. But instead of helping Egg with the preparation, Lockie decides to surf with Dot at the beach. Egg and Lockie decided to meet up and get some chairs from the church for the meeting. Instead of that Lockie went to the windfarm to meet Dot but she didn't show up. When Egg tried to take all the chairs to the house himself Boof came and destroyed them all. Everyone is disappointed at Lockie because he didn't keep his promises. Only two people showed up at the meeting. The next day Lockie made breakfast for Egg's parents.

Dear diary!

From now on my hometown is Angelus and it sucks. We live in a piece of trash house and I don’t know anyone around here. I start high school in four days and today we went to the school to sign me up and to take a look around. I met a beautiful girl when I was there and I made myself look stupid in front of her when I forgot the words house and family. I also told her that my name is Robbie William Miles which I, at that moment, just made up at the top of my head. My name is not Robbie William Miles. 

Later that day I went to the beach to try out the waves. I fell and the surfing board hit me in the nuts. Some guy called Egg saw it and helped me up from the sand. I still can’t walk properly and my family is teasing me because of my injury. Oh yea, also my little brother is a jerk for wetting his bed. 

Evaluation english

Red hat: I think it has been pretty easy the last weeks. I feel pretty proud of myself that I’ve done well.

Yellow hat: I’ve done well the last weeks and I have done well on tests too.

Black hat: I can’t come up with anything negative.

Green hat: I can show even more what I can by being more active in the classroom.

Blue hat: I have done decently well the last weeks but I don’t think it has been fun

Hi! I’m in Sydney, Australia. I love it here. So far we haven’t got to explore anything yet since we arrived at the airport this morning at 2 am. But I like it here. It’s very warm and dry, and that’s the only bad thing this far. I don’t like it when it’s dry. I get headaches.

Today we want to see the harbour and the Sydney Opera House. We are going to eat something later and tomorrow we will go to see some animls like the koala. They live in Australia because they eat leaves from the eucalyptus trees that only exists in Australia, thus koalas only live here. 

In a few days we will go to see Ayer’s Rock. I can only imagine the heat in the middle of the country.

HELLO! :]

I’m in Sweden for the moment. I’m here because me and my family are going to celebrate Christmas with my Swedish cousins in Jönköping. We will eat ham, herring, meatballs, sausages, potatoes and more. We were shopping the food today and I saw loads of Christmas decorations. Tomorrow we are going to cook some of the food, for example the ham.

Ghost story

Once, in a normal world were everything were normal, there was a very kind and happy ninja called Zaq. Zaq lived in a big house with his friends. The town they lived in were a very dark town with no lampposts because they had almost no electricity.

One day when Zaq went out for a walk he heard people scream. He ran at the direction he heard the screams from and after a few seconds he saw a group of dust-monsters in a circle around five people that were screaming. They were surrounded and had nowhere to run! When Zaq walked closer the dust-monsters turned around and looked him in the eyes. Their stare were so deep and empty. Zaq just stood there and looked at them. After a couple of seconds he snapped out if the “trance” and ran away. He didn’t know what to do.

That night Zaq couldn’t sleep. He laid in his bed and thought of the dust-monsters. He had to find a way to stop them! But he couldn’t come up with anything good.

The next day Zaq went for a walk. He had to find those monster and stop them! When Zaq came to the school  he saw the monsters again. They had caught a couple of kids and thrown away their backpacks. Zaq got angry. He had to help the kids! Zaq got an idea. He went into the school and went to the janitors room. He took a vacuum cleaner and ran outside. He pulled out his vacuum cleaner and turned it on. The monster tried to run but the vacuum cleaner was too strong. It sucked in the monsters and Zaq saved the day.
