Bookcircle tasks, Gift

Discussion Leader
  1. On page 51, Gift introduces his future bride to the white girl. She doesn’t take it very well but he doesn’t notice it. Why do you think Gift didn’t show any special feelings, other than being happy about having a future bride?
  2. On page 51, Gift refers the white girl as his ”English guest”. How do you think Gift saw their relationship, were they both in love with each other or were ”the english guest” only Gift’s friend?
  3. On page 49, the girl says she likes when people say she talks like an African. Why?
  4. On page 50, Gift’s little sisters laughs at the girl. How do you think she feels?
  5. On page 50, Gift and his future bride leaves the girl alone on a plastic chair, right after Gift had introduced his future bride to the girl. How do you think she feels when she sits there alone on the chair?
Creative connector
I couldn’t think of that many connections to this text. But one that I got when I read it was a connection with a web series, a humor series, that I’ve seen. It was a small scene where two colleagues on an office were talking. One of them got a promotion and his friend wanted to celebrate it by going out and having a beer. The other one were happy and they continued talking. When they were done the friend were about to leave but before he left he tried to kiss his friend. He had misread the situation, he thought it was a perfect time to kiss. The only problem was that both of them were guys and it got really awkward. The connection here is that the girl in the story also misread the situation and her relation with Gift. Maybe it would get just as awkward in the story as in the show if the girl would have kissed Gift.
